What are weight lifting belts?
A weightlifting belt is used in bodybuilding, as well as in strength sports or disciplines in weight training, such as weight lifting, squats, deadlifts, powerlifting or stone lifting and in throwing disciplines of athletics to support & protect the back, core muscles and spine (reduction of stress) during sport used. For back-heavy exercises and exercises with heavy weights, a belt ensures a straight and healthy posture for strength athletes and thus prevents injuries or minimizes the risk of injury to strength athletes.
What is the advantage of weight lifting belts?
The weightlifting belt or training belt not only offers the exerciser or the strength athlete more stability and security for the back & trunk muscles (reduction of the load), but also allows the athlete to handle more weight (maximum weight). This in turn has positive effects on building muscle and it results in increased muscle building. The belt or the training belt reduces the pressure inside the abdomen (abdominal pressure) and the stabilization of the spine is increased. Using a weightlifting belt in training leads to good shape and technique during the workout, because the exerciser simply has more stability in the whole body. You wrap the weightlifting belt around your abdomen so that your belly can only expand to the belt if you breathe deeply into your abdomen. The increased stability due to the belt strengthens the contraction of the muscles (e.g. abdominal muscles) per set of exercise and increases your performance accordingly per set. Then more repetitions are possible. Weight lifting belts are not only suitable for professionals in the fitness area, but can also be used well by beginners. Thus, both professionals and beginners can buy a weight lifting belt.
What weight lifting belts are there?
There are basically two different types or designs of weight lifting belts:
- Olympic weightlifting belt
- Powerlifting belt
Each of the two types of belts has its own intended use and therefore disadvantages in the other areas. An Olympic weightlifting belt is wider in the back part than in the front part, so that the weightlifting belt does not get in the way between the stomach and the thighs during the clean. For this reason, the size of the Olympic weightlifting belt at the front is only 60 mm wide. The narrow part in the front area offers more mobility, but less stabilization (made of nylon material) than a power lifting belt. An Olympic weightlifting belt is therefore not ideal for powerlifting, bodybuilding or the bodybuilder (disadvantage). If you want to tear or bump, an Olympic weight lifting belt or a strength training belt made of nylon is the best choice.
The Powerlifting Belt or Powerlifting Belt has the same width throughout and accordingly offers a greater support function than an Olympic weightlifting belt. The thickness of a powerlifting belt varies in size between 10 mm and 13 mm, but may not be thicker than 10 mm in official IPF powerlifting competitions. The powerlifting belt can be made of different materials. However, high quality powerlifting belts are made of genuine leather. Because this material or material (leather) is hard enough to give a high stability and thus relieve the spine. The powerlifting belt has its origins in powerlifting and is therefore used for bench presses, squats or deadlifts.
Closures of weight lifting belts
The types of lock differ in their functionality and security. Weight lifting belts can have the following locks or locking systems:
- Simple pin buckle: can be easily closed and offer just as much security as double pin buckles.
- Double pin buckle: Double pin buckles are very secure and are more difficult to close than simple pin buckles. This type of fastener is preferred by many athletes and is the most popular type of fastener for weight lifting belts.
- Snap locks: Snap locks are also very secure and can be easily closed and opened again. However, the snap closure is not adjustable in its tightness, which makes it harder to put on the belt as soon as you gain or lose weight.
- Velcro: The weight lifting belts with Velcro are mostly made of neoprene and can be easily closed & opened. However, these closures have the greatest wear compared to the other types of closures and are therefore somewhat less secure in the long term.
