Table tennis is a sport for professional and hobby players that is very popular with young and old. Table tennis is enjoyed regularly, especially in schools and clubs, as table tennis promotes coordination and speed. In addition to a suitable table tennis table and table tennis bats, table tennis balls are also part of the basic equipment for ball sports. Depending on the application, table tennis balls are offered in different sizes, colors and quality levels - which are marked with 1 to 3 stars. As a rule, a classic table tennis ball is made of plastic (polyball) or celluloid (dangerous goods), has a diameter of 40 millimeters and is hollow on the inside.

Table tennis balls are the focus of the tournament

Are there different table tennis balls depending on the level of play?

The skill level of the table tennis player should form the basis for the selection of suitable table tennis balls, especially in the training area. For this reason there is also a corresponding table tennis ball for every skill level. The size and color of the table tennis balls play an important role, especially for beginners. Somewhat larger balls can be used for children and newbies, which also significantly influences the speed and trajectory compared to a competition ball. This makes the game much easier. Basically, the balls allowed in the competition are white or orange, but for newbies a colored ball can make the game a lot easier at the beginning, as these balls are easier to see. In both cases, these practice balls increase the accuracy of professional and recreational players and thus emphasize the fun of the game.

If you want to buy table tennis balls for school or a club, you should consider the following game characteristics and quality levels / differences in quality:

  • Use fun or training balls for children and newbies, because the focus should be on fun.
  • Advanced and competitive players should regularly use an ITTF-certified competition / training ball. Such balls are marked with 3 stars.
  • Balls with 2 or just one star are suitable for use in public areas and in training.
  • Large packs in the practical box facilitate storage and transport.

With the beginning of the 2000/2001 season, the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) abolished its approval procedure for table tennis balls. The approval and classification of the balls is now the responsibility of the World Association of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), which is based on certain quality requirements. The classics among competition balls and the most played ITTF balls, due to their high quality and durability, mostly come from the companies JOOLA® and Donic-Schildkröt®.

When should old table tennis balls be replaced?

You can recognize an old table tennis ball by the poor bounce behavior and the dents that can arise in the course of use. Although the material of the plastic ball is completely different from a tennis ball, a table tennis ball can be deformed to a similar extent due to the tremendous pressure during the rallies. After a corresponding use, the ball loses its suppleness or dents form when you step on the ball. Such used balls should no longer be used in competition or in serious training. The acquisition of new table tennis balls is advisable for this. However, if you still want to use pressed balls as fun balls, you can simply put them in hot water. After a while these are rounded again and are spherical. The heated air inside the ball expands due to the heat and pushes the dents out again.

The care of table tennis balls

If you want to buy a certain number of table tennis balls, you should also think about their maintenance. Correct storage in appropriate boxes not only ensures safe transport, but also protects the balls from dust and dents. The table tennis balls should also be regularly cleaned of dust and dirt with a cloth. A layer of dust or dirt reduces the grip of the ball and thus changes the playing behavior significantly. Regular cleaning gives you the grip and consistency you need for your game and you can enjoy your balls for a long time.
